Description:

Orthopaedic surgery is the 'nuts & bolts' speciality; it is as much a biomechanical science as it is a surgical craft. In orthopaedics, the mode of treatment and the choice of implants are just as important as the skill to operate precisely to reach a specific anatomical landmark. The traditional view has been that only the advance trainees in orthopaedics require a good grasp of biomechanics. However, the understanding and application of biomechanics in orthopaedics has expanded exponentially in the recent times, and this plays a much greater role in modern orthopaedic treatments. Accordingly, there have emerged a number of core principles in orthopaedic biomechanics. It is important now that the junior trainees in orthopaedics have an appreciation of the basic biomechanics in orthopaedics in order to flourish in this surgical specialty.

The Training Orthopaedic Trainers programme has been established to improve the standard of teaching for those in trauma and orthopaedic (T&O) training and practice. The underlying premise is that if T&O trainers understand how people learn and how the T&O curriculum works, by translating that understanding into action, they should improve their teaching.

An established T&O surgical trainer and our educational advisor, Lisa Hadfield-Law, facilitate each course. Over the last 15 years, Lisa has trained over 4000 T&O surgeons to teach, from 57 countries within Europe, North America, Latin America, and Asia Pacific.
